MAKING OF TANJORE

The making of a Tanjore painting involves dedicated labour. Each painting is done stage by stage. In the first stage, layers of cloth are pasted tightly over wood to form the base. A paste is applied on the board to soften it for the drawing. After the drawing is made, detailed decoration with semi-precious material is done using semi-precious stones, cut-glass and pearls.
Selected gems of varied hues, are inlaid onto this layer of paste. Gold leaves are affixed on selected areas. The shine and glean on the gold leaves used by the true Tanjore style paintings, will last forever. The remaining areas are painted using bright colours. The size of the figures in the pictures is usually not relative, with the main figure usually being the largest. Faces are chubby and cherubic, figures usually rounded. Utmost care is taken to see that conventional depictions of the gods/goddesses are maintained. All figures are usually heavily decorated with jewellery.
The paintings decorate the puja rooms in residences, arcades in major hotels and lobbies in Corporate Offices.
